Dr. Francis Cecil Sumner, Ph.

Considered the "father of black psychology," Dr. Francis Cecil Sumner was the first black man to earn a doctorate in the field in the 1920s. His interest focused primarily on understanding racial injustice and inequality and on achieving equality in education. He was interested in the way blacks were treated in the criminal justice system and in racial disparities (specifically between blacks and whites) in mental health.

Dr. Sumner served at a number of colleges and universities, from the Southern University of Louisiana to the West Virginia Institute of Higher Education (now West Virginia State College), but in his interest in improving conditions for black Americans, he accepted a position at Howard University in 1928. As at many other historically black institutions, psychology was then taught in the philosophy department of that school, and Dr. Sumner firmly believed that psychology needed its own faction in order to properly train and educate future black psychologists. A few years later, in 1930, Howard University established a department of psychology, and for twenty years Dr. Sumner taught the next generation of Negro scientists.

Jackie McKinney, MSW

Jackie McKinney, a founding member of the National Network of Black Consumers and Survivors, earned her bachelor's degree in social work after persevering through numerous life traumas. McKinney has used her experience of feeling unheard and underrepresented in the mental health and addiction field to become an advocate and voice for communities of color. As a spokesperson, she has advocated for the development of policies against isolation and containment (typically seen as a method of holding people suffering from a mental breakdown), advocated for support of intergenerational families, and fought for inclusion and prioritization of mental health care for minorities. She received several awards and recognitions during her lifetime, most notably the Clifford W. Beers Award given by Mental Health America to individuals who work tirelessly to improve overall mental health care, conditions, and awareness. Best addiction treatment center in Lahore

Dr. Alta J. Stewart, M.D.

In 2018, Dr. Alta J. Stewart was named the recipient of the Dr. Stewart Award, making her the first black woman and the fourth woman to lead the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Her career has spanned nearly 30 years in a variety of industries and institutions, with the primary driving force in all of them being raising awareness and care for mental health in minority communities. Dr. Stewart is a committee member of the National Network to Eliminate Behavioral Health Disparities (NNED) at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and, along with others, works to address mental health and substance use needs of racially and ethnically diverse communities. During her tenure as President of APA, one of her primary goals has been to increase the presence and availability of organized mental health care, as she believes that there is some level of social responsibility to respond to and improve issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and ageism that profoundly affect the overall well-being of various demographic groups in the United States.

Dr. Stewart, the recipient of many different awards and degrees over his lifetime, currently teaches at the University of Tennessee and is a member of the JED Advisory Board. The JED Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes emotional health and well-being and works to prevent youth suicide by providing tools and coping mechanisms for young people in life's most difficult situations. Best addiction treatment center in Lahore
